As part of Nutrition program for children, Anjana procured its first cow in the year 2004. School’s 75 children in were provided with a glass of milk every day. More cows were added gradually as the requirement for more milk grew. Currently the Goshala houses 30+ cows, largely of Desi breeds (Halikar, Malenadu Gidda, Shahiwal, Kankrej and Gir).
Our community engagement programs involved children and parents; efforts were made to sensitize them on several issues of animal care, protecting desi breeds of cows, cow products and in addition, the issue of cow-mother nursing her baby for a few months whether the calf is a male or a female – and not sell the male calf to butchers within the first week of its birth. Male-calf protection came as an offshoot of the above effort, as the local farmers started bringing their male calves to Brahmi Goshala. More than 2000 baby calves have been saved so far.
Our organic farm Activity is mainly meant to support school’s food & nutrition (noon-meal) program. It also acts as a platform for dissemination of knowledge on goodness living practices through growing safe and healthy food. The focus is also to provide a practical means to understand nutritional, medicinal values of locally grown herbs, millets, vegetables and greens.
We have student led holistic co-curricular skill exposure programmes for our children complementing academic curriculum. Many of them are learner-centric programmes aimed at imbibing deeper knowledge in various non-formal disciplines. They aim at nurturing confident, independent and socially-responsible learners and guide children to learn about their interests, skills, and innovations beyond the classroom and develop skill-sets among them to explore their areas of interests independently.
Some of the activities include art & craft involving pottery, wall murals, painting and jewellery making, Stitching & Embroidery leading to entrepreneurship building. The community women and children are trained in making organic pesticides and soil nutrients such as Jeevamrutham, Panchagavyam, Agniastra and other desi cowdung products such as Cakes, Doop, Cowdung-ART and CRAFT items (ecofriendly Dung-Ganesha and Diyas) among other daily use products.
