This was Brahmi’s first Project meant for providing support services for children to continue on the path of elementary education. The setting was open playground in front of a Govt. School in Jagadishnagar slums close to Jeevanbhimanagar, Bengaluru. A few volunteers from NAL Bangalore would converge everyday to engage children of construction workers in play. The main attraction for about 80 children, part from play, was tasty snacks served at the end of play session.
Early 2000 a house was rented to provide focused training to about 25 children with a focus towards readmitting them all in Govt. Schools based on their age and learning,
By the end of 2001 a fraction of the first set of beneficiaries enrolled in schools had left the school due to migratory nature of parent’s vocation. Team Brahmi took a decision to create a permanent campus to carry out these activities.
Anjana Vidya Mandira study center (renamed as Anjana Vidya Kendra after it became a school). a beacon of hope and education for hundreds of children, had its roots planted through a generous and visionary act — the donation of land by a local philanthropist family of Sri. Krishnamurthy. This simple yet profound gesture marked the beginning of an institution that would go on to transform lives and communities. The name ANJANA (Hanuman’s mother) was selected to highlight our main focus of EDUCATING DISADVANTAGED GIRLS which also resonated well with the village community with school built right opposite Anjaneya (Hanuman) Temple.
Anjna Vidy a Mandira started in June 2001 with a batch of 33 children picked from nearby villages comprising mostly of school dropouts, girls not attending any school and all belonging to families for who education was not a priority.
From those modest beginnings, with a handful of students and minimal infrastructure, Anjana Vidya Kendra steadily grew into a respected High School recognised by Govt. of Karnataka from grade 1 to 10, currently serving the educational needs of about 350 rural families.
